Landlords in New Zealand will soon be allowed to request an additional bond from tenants with pets. This new “pet bond” will be up to two weeks’ rent, on top of the usual bond of up to four weeks’ rent.

Under the new rules, tenants will be responsible for any pet-related damage beyond normal wear and tear. They’ll also need their landlord’s consent before getting a pet, which could be refused for “reasonable grounds.”

The policy, part of the National / ACT coalition agreement, aims to give tenants with pets more rental options. It’s seen as a step towards creating a better rental market and addressing New Zealand’s housing crisis.

Housing Minister Chris Bishop highlighted the importance of pets to Kiwi families, with around 64% of households owning a pet. The new policy aims to make it easier for pet owners to find rental properties.

Regulation Minister David Seymour emphasized that the policy will help tenants who struggle to find rentals that allow pets. It’s also seen as a way to support victims of domestic abuse who often face challenges finding pet-friendly accommodation.

Pet Refuge, a charity providing shelter for pets of abuse victims, welcomed the move. They believe it will help reunite pets with their families sooner and support the recovery of abuse survivors.

The changes are expected to be introduced to Parliament in May as part of amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act.
