The Automobile Association (AA) in New Zealand has identified January 2 and 3 as the peak days for holidaymakers returning, with traffic congestion expected north and south of Auckland, where the largest population centers are located. AA chief policy officer Simon Douglas advised travelers to avoid peak travel times, particularly before 10 am and after 4 pm. He also highlighted government maintenance programs affecting traffic and advised caution amid variable weather conditions and heavy rain warnings.
