Nearly 5000 unwanted Christmas gifts have already been listed on Trade Me, according to the online auction site. Items include a $500 vintage cast iron chicken, a bike for someone who can’t ride, and men’s perfume mistakenly purchased for a woman. A survey of 5000 Kiwis revealed that 44% receive a disappointing Christmas gift every year. The trend of reselling unwanted gifts has increased, with 19% planning to list such items in 2023, compared to 10% in 2022. Trade Me suggests sellers tick the “unwanted gift” box when listing and consider a good backstory without making the listing identifiable.
