In the latest COVID-19 update, New Zealand has recorded 3953 new cases of the virus and 12 additional deaths within the past week. Among the new cases, 1816 were identified as reinfections. The total death toll attributed to COVID-19 in the country has risen to 3261. As of the latest data, there are 158 individuals hospitalized, with five in intensive care units.

The update follows the removal of COVID-19 mandates on August 15, which means that self-isolation for seven days upon testing positive and the requirement to wear masks in healthcare facilities are no longer legally enforced. Despite these changes, healthcare experts and authorities encourage individuals to continue practicing measures learned during the pandemic, such as staying home when sick and wearing masks in healthcare settings. Although restrictions have eased, health officials emphasize the importance of responsible behavior to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Additionally, health authorities in the United States, Denmark, and Israel are monitoring a new highly mutated variant of the virus, known as BA.2.86, which has been identified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
