A fire broke out at a hostel in Wellington, causing multiple fatalities and injuries. Fire and Emergency received an alert at 12.25am and said they were expecting the number of fatalities to increase. Fifty-two people were taken out of the building, but others remain unaccounted for. Five people were taken to hospital, two in serious condition. A resident of the hostel, said fire alarms went off regularly, but this time none sounded. Crews were working to extinguish the fire, and a drone was being used in the effort. Adelaide Road between John Street and the Basin Reserve was closed.
