The week from Monday, May 01st to Sunday, May 07th.
New Zealand had 12,277 new cases of Covid-19 in the week leading to midnight on Sunday. During the same period, there were 30 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 2792. Currently, there are 249 people with the virus in the hospital, with 12 in intensive care. The World Health Organization declared that Covid-19 was no longer a “global health emergency.” Although the virus remains a significant threat, the official estimate is that at least 7 million people died during the pandemic, but the actual number may be closer to 20 million deaths. Dr. Michael Baker, an epidemiologist from New Zealand, believes that the WHO’s decision is appropriate, but it will not affect how countries manage the infection.
