Employees at Awanui Labs, which manages medical laboratories in the South Island and the Wellington region, are set to strike on Friday and Monday after unsuccessful pay negotiations. The lab workers, represented by APEX, argue that Awanui Labs pays 30% less than Te Whatu Ora-run labs, leading to concerns about retaining a professional workforce. APEX contends that if Awanui Labs does not achieve pay parity with public labs, it risks losing skilled staff over time. The strike will affect various locations, including Dunedin, Wellington, Christchurch, and Invercargill, among others.

Strike details:
Friday 17 November – all day, Dunedin, Frankton, Wellington, Nelson, Timaru, Oamaru, Napier, Hastings Monday 20 November – all day, Christchurch, Ashburton, Invercargill
