Scams cost New Zealanders almost $200 million in the past year, according to data from 11 major financial institutions, released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) at the beginning of Fraud Awareness Week. The MBIE cautions consumers, especially those with savings or investments, to be wary of investment scams. The ministry emphasizes that real investments don’t appear out of the blue, and if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers are increasingly using methods like text messaging, and the MBIE advises people to verify investment offers through official channels.
