The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued warnings for coastal areas of New Zealand due to the strong currents and unpredictable surges expected after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in the Pacific. A tsunami threat has been issued for Vanuatu, Fiji, and New Caledonia. NEMA advises people to stay away from the water, beaches, harbors, and estuaries. Coastal inundation is not expected. People in the affected areas are advised to follow the instructions of local civil defense authorities and evacuate if necessary. Similar warnings have been issued in Vanuatu as well.
